Alfetta GT / GTV (116), 01.1978 – 02.1987

The sports coupé was based on the platform of the Alfetta sedan, which had its wheelbase shortened by eleven centimeters, and was introduced at the beginning of 1974. Its unique body was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, with whom Alfa Romeo had a close collaboration at the time. Giugiaro wanted to implement numerous ideas in the original body design of the Alfetta GT that were unusual for the time.
The combination of an extremely flat and low front with a voluminous rear was intended on the one hand to improve aerodynamics, but on the other hand it also offered space for four people and a comparatively generous trunk. The originally planned design of the front with partially covered headlights based on the model of the Alfa Romeo Montreal was rejected during the development stage for cost reasons.
Due to changed American approval regulations regarding the height of the headlights, they were enlarged relatively late in development, which led to the unusual design with the hood pulled down between the light units.
