Detailed article description for DIN 912 cylinder screws, with hexagon socket
DIN 912 cylinder screws, with hexagon socket are the TOP product in the screw sector. Used almost everywhere in mechanical and plant engineering, automotive technology or in construction, screws with a cylinder head (and usually hexagon socket) are still indispensable today. They are also known as hexagon socket screws. They are assembled using hexagon socket or angle wrenches. These screws have a metric standard thread (M).
The hexagon socket - the drive profile in the screw head
Cylinder screws with hexagon socket have the eponymous hexagonal drive profile in the screw head. In Germany in particular, the acronym INBUS is often used instead of "hexagon socket". INBUS is the abbreviation for "Bauer and Schaurte hexagon socket screw" and is derived from the original manufacturer Bauer & Schaurte. Contrary to the correct pronunciation, INBUS is often pronounced as "Imbus". The process for producing hexagon socket screws has been known and patented since 1910.
Advantages of cylinder head screws with hexagon sockets in accordance with DIN 912
Cylinder head screws with hexagon sockets are ideal for screw connections where the screw heads are difficult to access. To tighten the screws, it is sufficient if the screw heads can be reached from above, for example via a hole. The hexagon socket keys required for tightening are extremely inexpensive to manufacture, so that the wrenches can be included as a mass-produced item in construction kits - furniture, etc. The round shape of the cylinder head screws also minimizes the risk of injury and prevents textiles or parts from getting caught.
Special features of cylinder head screws
Cylinder head screws have a smaller head diameter, which is why special, smaller washers in accordance with DIN 433 are used for them. The thread length is not standardized. In most cases, short cylinder head screws have a full thread and, from an inaccurate total length, a partial thread with a threadless shaft.
Thread shape and materials of DIN 912 cylinder head screws, with hexagon socket
A metric standard thread (M) is common for cylinder head screws. However, we also supply cylinder head screws with a fine thread (Mf) or inch thread. For optical purposes where the screw has to be "attractive", stainless steel A2 or A4 (acid-resistant) is often used. If strength is the main priority, high-strength cylinder head screws with strength 8.8, 10.9 or even 12.9 are often used, optionally with anti-corrosion coating.
