Detailed article description for DIN 931 hexagon screws with shaft
DIN 931 hexagon screws with shaft are screws with a thread, where the head is shaped in the form of an external hexagon. They are the TOP product in the screw trade. The screw has a partial thread - i.e. a threadless shaft and an adjoining thread. Due to production reasons, there may be a small threadless gap between the underside of the head and the thread. They do not have a drive in the head, here the head itself is the drive of the screw. It is moved with a ring or open-end wrench. Hexagon screws with partial thread are often used in mechanical and plant engineering, in cars, vintage cars, motorcycles, agricultural machinery, trucks or in measurement and electrical engineering.
DIN 931 includes hexagon screws with shaft, also known as machine screws. This type of screw offers a large selection of lengths across all nominal thread sizes and can therefore be used for a wide variety of applications. From a design perspective, hexagon screws according to DIN 931 offer the great advantage that the shaft has the full diameter of the nominal size and is not limited to the core diameter of the thread as with other types of screws. This design of hexagon screws according to DIN 931 increases the shear strength. At the same time, an improved fit and a visually appealing appearance are achieved.
Advantages of using hexagon screws according to DIN 931
Hexagon screws are extremely easy to assemble and disassemble. Furthermore, hexagon screws according to DIN 931 generate a detachable connection - the components can be separated from each other quickly and easily if necessary. In contrast to adhesives, hexagon screws are extremely temperature-resistant. Furthermore, hexagon screws according to DIN 931 can be used to reliably connect a wide variety of materials.
Special features of partially threaded screws
The thread does not reach all the way to the head. These screws consist of the threaded part and a threadless shaft. The exact thread length is generally standardized, but nowadays it is usually up to the manufacturer how long the shaft is produced, as the DIN standards have been discontinued. Partially threaded hexagon screws are produced in longer lengths than fully threaded screws, but you will not find extremely short hexagon screws in partial threads.
Advantages of DIN 931 hexagon screws with shaft
Unlike screws with a slot or Phillips head, external hexagon screws can also be used when the screw head is no longer accessible from above. In addition, hexagon screws are suitable when there is a lack of space due to their relatively low head height.
Material recommendation for DIN 931 hexagon screws with shaft
Hexagon screws for outdoor use should be made of at least stainless steel A2. If there is permanent contact with water or temporary contact with salt water or acids, stainless steel A4 should be used. For applications in steel construction or mechanical engineering, high-strength screws with strengths of 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 are available. These are available either bare or surface treated (e.g. galvanized or hot-dip galvanized).
